The Classic Ladies Metropolitan (Bobbys) Whistle, also known as the City Whistle, is a nickel plated brass police whistle used by the Police Force in the United Kingdom. In terms of history, the origin of the whistle dates back to Joseph Hudson's passion for whistles in the 1870s. He experimented with various types and designs until he conceived the idea for a police whistle in 1883. While playing his violin and contemplating this idea, fate intervened. The London Police were in search of a replacement for the cumbersome hand rattle, and no one had thought of using a whistle before.

As Joseph Hudson accidentally dropped his violin, it made a unique sound as it hit the floor. Recognizing the distinctive trill of the violin's dying note, he knew he had found the perfect sound for his police whistle. Upon testing by the Metropolitan Police in London, the whistle's far-carrying sound was heard over a mile away. It was immediately adopted as the official whistle of the London Bobby in 1883 and is still used by the police force in London today.
